If there are strong winds and thunder, one must be silent, because if one speaks, this attracts the fairies and one will lose one’s voice or become deaf. Also, mythical or demonic creatures such as dragons, fairies, vampires, karakonjuli and others should not be spoken about, as it is believed that words can summon them and they could attack someone. Even songs that mention dragons or fairies are not good to sing for the same reason.
If a tree root, which is a former haunt of fairies, is left in the foundations of a house, they can return there and scare the occupants of the house in various ways – knocking on the door, knocking on the ceiling, etc. The behavior of a deceased person who has committed suicide or been killed is similar. Such a spirit can be banished only with water repeatedly sanctified by a priest.
The deceased must be protected from being jumped over by an animal, such as a cat. If this happens, he will be a vampire and will appear in his house at night or will do mischief – he can untie the cattle in the barn, mix beans with rye on the ceiling, he can knock, and if he meets a man – to strangle him.
If there is money buried long ago, they “stopanyasvat” – a landlord appears to protect them. He is usually a ragged white-bearded old man. If the money is in the house, the landlord visits it at night when everyone is asleep, and calls out the name of the host or hostess, then disappears again.
